Description
Hey Sam et al,
Had an idea for a small but effective improvement involving Gravatars. I've launched two new forums running BBPress RC2 and the #1 question I get is "how do I select my profile picture". Most people have no clue what a Gravatar is, let alone an Avatar, and want to select their default picture right off the bat.
Right out of the box, the selection of the Default Gravatar Logo, MonsterIDs, Wavatars, or Identicons is great, but how about this? Create a new link internally under the profile admin links after logging in or at the very least within the Edit Profile page...maybe "select your Gravatar"? Make the link go to an informational page on how to pick a Gravatar (tell them it is associated with their email) or merely a link to the Gravatar website?
Think about it: Profile pictures are crucial to forums, much more so than profiles for folks who want to leave comments on a Wordpress site. It is in Automattic's best interest to make it as easy as possible for a newbie to grab a Gravatar. The more widespread Gravatars become the better it will be for everyone in the years to come. With Gravatars built into BBPress it makes sense to at least have a little internal information on how to select one. Otherwise every single BBPress administrator needs to create a sticky explaining how to select one, and let's face it, most people are not going to think to look at the stickies right off the bat (They are going to spend a while trying to find a link to select their picture under their profile)
I totally understand that there are plugins to upload avatars, etc, but let's remember Gravatars are built right into the core. Seems like there is no information for a newbie BBPress signup re: Gravatars. A very small amount (informational page or link to the Gravatar website) would go a long way.

I don't think this will be well accepted amongst users.
Gravatar exists in bbPress to create an easy way to add avatars and as a boilerplate for people wanting to incorporate their own solution. It's not there to drive usage of the Gravatar service particularly.
The sorts of things you want to add can be done by customising the template for the profile page.

I would love if this was reconsidered. I do not know php, and I assume many other users don't, either. Maybe it could be offered to the admin, whether s/he wants to show this notice?

There are many plugins that offer this functionality, at this stage we're not looking to add this functionality to bbPress.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=bbpress+avatar
https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=bbpress+gravatar
There are also a couple listed here https://codex.bbpress.org/feature-plugins-tracking/
If one of those was to be considered for merging into bbPress then we'd look to follow the "feature as a plugin" model desribed here, if that were the case a new ticket should be created at the time outlining the proposal per the "feature as a plugin" guidlines.

This information is wrong. There are no plugins offering this feature under any of the links you mentioned. I checked everything twice.

I think @netweb was assuming you were looking to get information about how to upload custom avatars alongside or instead of Gravatar. From that perspective, this information linked is completely correct. Since you're looking to for a way to link to Gravatar on a user's edit profile page, that is a question for the forums, which I see you've already posted.
How about this...maybe something simple under the "Edit Profile" screen saying (when the "Show avatars" option is selected under "Avatar display"):
"Your profile picture is randomly selected. To pick it yourself visit Gravatar.com" (Gravatar.com would be hyperlinked)
BLAM DONE. And TWO win-win things happen:
1) This will put an end once and for all to confusion re: how someone who signs up on a bbPress site selects their profile picture. NEVER AGAIN will site admins get emails regarding profile picture selection!!!
2) TONS of new folks are going to signup for Gravatar (service becomes more widespread).
